Kismet

A Cooler Kind of Town

The westernmost town on Fire Island is infamous for its let it be attitude. Kismet is perfect for singles, families with kids and day trippers who flock to the beach with their chairs and coolers for the day. The beach, a large marina, two restaurants, The Inn and Dive, are the center of the action. With a Margaritaville vibe, homes have humorous names. Places to stay or rent are plentiful for those who don’t take life too seriously at the beach. Ferries leave from Bay Shore

About Kismet

Kismet is just a shell’s throw from the Fire Island Lighthouse. Residents enjoy its reputation as a town where anything goes. It’s a great choice for singles, group shares and families with kids.

Many houses are rented by groupers, who play on the beach by day and party into the night on their deck and at the bars. Singles share the town amicably with families and homeowners, many who were singles here.

Many houses have names like Bananas, The Edge, Margaritaville, or Life is Better at the Beach. The atmosphere is fun, relaxed, and live and let live.

Town Center

The town center is on the bay. There is a grocery store, two restaurants, a large marina, basketball court, public tennis courts, playground, ice cream and pizza shops on the dock.

At the two bay front restaurants, The Inn and Dive, diners enjoy a nice lobster while watching the sunset. Later on, singles meet and keep the fun going. Bands often play here on weekends into the night.

Children can run off steam at the nearby playground while your lunch or dinner is being prepared.

Later on, you can have beer or three and dance the night away when Dive turns on the music, or play pinball till all hours at the Inn.

Recreation

Recreation is what we do best on Fire Island, and Kismet knows how to do it right.

Tennis players can enjoy a game or have a private lesson at the Camelot tennis courts, just a few steps from the ocean. The kids can run around in the nearby playground while their parents dine nearby.

Boating enthusiasts from all over the island and the South Shore come to catch bluefish and snapper, dock at the Marina, and have a late night beer or three at the Inn.

Of course, there’s the ocean, where day trippers bring coolers, take a dunk in the ocean and catch a game of volleyball on the beach. Or at least watch one.

The Community

The many Year-Rounders who make the Kismet their home are intrepid souls, with a strong sense of community. The Kismet Community Association has an active membership committed to town affairs. Many of the professionals who service the area live here year round.

The volunteer Fire Department was built by Kismet residents who have also funded their own lifeguard protection. All of Fire Island’s firefighters are a closely knit group, protecting the communities together.

Staying Here

Rent a room at Margarita Villas, Camelot Court or The Boatel. Many short term and seasonal home rentals for families and groups are available.

Group shares and day trippers are welcome here and there is a good time to be had in Kismet. It’s a cooler kind of town, so bring yours and play with us!
